Common Signs of a Bad Alternator to Watch For

Your alternator is a crucial component of your vehicle that keeps your battery charged and allows your car to turn on and run accessories like the radio and headlights. If your alternator isn’t working properly, you may find that your car won’t start at all or that it only stays on for a couple of minutes.

Having a bad alternator can be a nuisance, especially when you’re already running late. Before your alternator quits working, here are a few signs of a failing alternator to watch for to avoid the headaches of a car that won’t start.

1. Flickering or Dim Headlights

One of the more common signs of a failing alternator is dimming, flickering, or overly bright headlights. This is especially true if you notice that your headlights are growing dimmer or brighter as you increase or decrease speed.

If the lights on your dashboard also appear dim, that’s another sure-fire sign of a failing alternator. This is because as your alternator starts to fail, it will provide less consistent power to electronic accessories.

2. Trouble Starting Your Car

If your car won’t start or it turns over multiple times before finally starting, your alternator may be in jeopardy. You may also notice a clicking sound when you turn the key in the ignition.

On the other hand, a dead battery may be why your car won’t start. And if your vehicle often stalls, the issue may signal that the spark plugs that get powered by the alternator need to be replaced.

3. Unusual Noises

Vehicles make a ton of unusual noises from time to time — some may be harmless, but others may indicate major problems. If you notice clicking, grinding, or whining noises under the hood, your alternator may be at risk. These sounds may be caused by worn-out bearings or a misaligned pulley.

4. Electrical Failures

The alternator is the primary source of electrical power to your vehicle, so it only makes sense that electrical failures can be a good sign of alternator problems. Examples of electrical failures related to a failing alternator could include the inability to operate your power windows, locks, radio, or windshield wipers.

You may not be able to prevent a failing alternator, but you can take quick action whenever issues arise to keep your vehicle working properly. To know for sure what problems are happening with your alternator, have your car tested by an experienced auto repair shop.
