If your car’s engine smells like burning electricity, Anderson Automotive recommends that you pull over and call for a tow truck to have your vehicle towed to our shop. You do not want to run the risk of starting an electrical fire in the engine. One of the most common reasons why the electrical system will get too hot is a faulty alternator. If the alternator generates more voltage than the system can handle, it will overheat.
Dim/Overly Bright Lights
The minimum voltage an alternator generates is 13 volts. The maximum voltage is 14.5 volts. One sign that the alternator is generating too little or too much voltage is your vehicle’s lights. If they are too dim, the alternator needs to generate more voltage. If they are too bright, it’s over-generating voltage.
Hard Starts/Dead Battery
A malfunctioning alternator can also make it difficult to start your automobile. You may end up with a dead battery because the alternator is not capable of keeping the battery charged. This is part of its normal job. If your battery is not holding a charge, the alternator may actually be to blame.
Accessory Malfunction
The alternator also provides power to your vehicle’s accessories. Consequently, if the alternator is struggling to produce power, the accessories will malfunction. For example, you may find that your power windows have slowed down or that your radio refuses to stay on.
Spark Plug Malfunction
You may also end up with malfunctioning spark plugs that cause your engine to stall if the alternator is not sending enough power to the plugs. When you first start your automobile, the starter shoots electricity to the plugs. While the vehicle is running, the alternator powers the plugs.
Strange Growling Noises
Your alternator will also make strange growling noises if it is wearing out. The belt to which it is attached might squeal or growl if it is too loose. If you hear strange noises coming from the engine, head straight to our shop so we can investigate the sound. Strange noises could signal engine damage.
Battery Warning Light
Finally, all of the above may or may not be accompanied by an illuminated battery light on the dashboard. Sometimes, the engine control module turns on the battery light when the alternator malfunctions. This light will stay on until you replace the faulty alternator with a new one.
