Anderson Automotive can help if your engine’s performance is being affected by a malfunctioning fuel pump. We are going to list the signs of a faulty fuel pump below so you know what to look for in your automobile. Bring your vehicle to our shop at the first sign of trouble.
Poor Performance
Unfortunately, there is no way that your engine can perform efficiently if the fuel pump is going bad. The engine needs a constant supply of fuel in order to run smoothly and gain power. If the fuel pump is malfunctioning and the engine does not have enough fuel, you will notice that your engine loses power when it is under stress or when you are driving fast.
Surging Performance
The opposite can also occur. The engine can start to surge and pick up speed if the fuel pump is overworking. Anytime it sends extra fuel into the engine, this fuel is burned in the combustion chamber. The added fuel gives the engine added power and it picks up speed.
Poor Fuel Economy
Whether your engine is sputtering or speeding, the faulty fuel pump is going to reduce the fuel economy. In order to get the best gas mileage out of your car, truck, or utility vehicle, the engine needs to run as efficiently as possible.
Constant Overheating
It may seem strange, but a faulty fuel pump can make your engine overheat. This happens because the fuel pump’s electric motor gets too hot. The pump motor can overheat if it is unable to draw enough gasoline to cool it. This excess heat will transfer to the engine.
Reduced Fuel Pressure
Your engine is also going to have problems performing because the fuel pressure will not be at the correct rating. Unfortunately, if the fuel pump is weak, you will have reduced fuel pressure in the engine. If you bring your vehicle to our shop, we can test the fuel pressure for you to see if it is within the normal range.
Difficult/No Starts
Finally, you probably don’t need us to tell you that your engine may not start if the fuel pump isn’t working. Obviously, the engine cannot start if it doesn’t have any gasoline or diesel fuel. You may receive a warning before the fuel pump dies completely. If you are having problems getting your engine started, bring your vehicle to our shop.
